Frequently Asked Questions

Can I transfer from one building to another Student Housing Works location?

You are permitted to change locations after you move in, but only under the following conditions.
You must commit to your initial reservation dates if you signed a rental agreement. Any application or service fees must be paid for the new location, even if you paid the same fees for your first reservation.

Are there laundry machines in the building?

There are coin-operated laundry machines available.

Did New York Tech students live in the building?

Yes. NY Institute of Technology used to lease the building. The school no longer leases the building.

What’s your policy on quiet hours?

Quiet Hours have been established to ensure that the living environment is
conducive to studying and sleeping. The Quiet Hours are from 10:00 p.m. until 9:00 a.m. the
following morning on Sunday through Thursday and from midnight 12:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. the
following morning on Friday and Saturday. In addition to Quiet Hours, courtesy hours exist 24
hours a day, every day. At no point should the noise of an individual or group have the potential
to disrupt any other Tenant. Having a stereo or musical instrument is permitted, but the privilege
may be revoked should Tenant demonstrate disregard for volume control or otherwise play
music at volumes that are disruptive. Tenant will not create a disturbance or noise that is
disruptive to or interferes with others quiet enjoyment.

What is your policy on appliances?

The following type of appliances may be used in Premises: Micro fridges,
microwave ovens, desk and floor lamps (60-watt limit), stereos, TVs, VCRs, DVD players,
computers, printers, fans, hair dryers, electric hair curlers, electric razors, heating pads, coffee
pots, and closed-coil hotpots. All appliances must be UL-approved, kept in proper repair and
must be used according to manufacturer recommendations. Riverside Terrace reserves the right
to limit appliances based on misuse and/or excessive electrical usage. All extension cords and
power strips used in the building must be the LCDI type (Leakage Current Detection and
Interruption). Power strips may not be connected to one another, (e.g. daisy-chaining). Riverside
Terrace staff reserve the right to remove any unauthorized, problematic, or dangerous electrical
appliance. Unapproved and forbidden appliances will be confiscated and disposed of if found in
the building and action may be taken against Tenant who possess such items. Unapproved
appliances include, but are not limited to: halogen lamps, sun lamps, hot plates, toaster ovens,
electric fryers, electric heaters (unless specifically approved by the buildings Fire Safety
Director) and any electronic device that the buildings Fire Safety Director exclusively
determines may pose a fire or safety hazard.

What else should I know about the location?

Riverside Terrace Residence Hall is situated within a warm and friendly residential environment, bustling with cafes, boutiques, bookstores, movie theaters, and cultural activities as well as regular neighborhood amenities. Nearby, you can relax or get active in the natural beauty of Central Park or Riverside Park.

The multicultural, multigenerational ambience of the Upper West Side will make you feel welcome, whether you’re from around the corner or the other side of the globe. Subways and buses are readily available from Riverside to all areas of New York City. We do not recommend that you bring a car to Riverside, since we do not have parking facilities for students.

  • The 1 subway line entrance is on the corner of 86th Street and Broadway. The closest subway station to Riverside, the 1 train provides quick transportation to NYIT’s classrooms.

  • The M104 bus runs on Broadway and stops between 87th and 88th Streets while headed downtown and between 88th and 89th Streets while headed uptown. Students taking the M104 to school will be dropped off directly in front of NYIT’s main campus building.
  • The downtown M5 bus stops on Riverside Drive between 88th and 89th Streets while the uptown M5 bus stops on Riverside Drive between 87th and 88th Streets. Many students choose to take the M5 to and from classes since it provides nearly door-to-door transportation to classes and requires minimal walking.

  • Should you need to reach Riverside Terrace by car, take the West Side Highway to the 95th street exit, then turn right onto Riverside Drive. Turn left onto 88th Street. Riverside Terrace will be the second awning on your right.

What’s included in my room?

In-house telephone for incoming and room-to-room calls only.A standard twin bed, dresser, desk, chair, and lamp. A 20-inch color television with limited basic cable service. WiFi Internet access in all rooms. You may bring your own small refrigerator and microwave or request them at the front desk.

Is room cleaning service available?

Not at this time.

Are linens and towels provided?

Currently towels, linens, and comforters are not provided. You must bring your own.

What is the difference between rooms?

The rooms vary in size and all have the same amenities.

How much is the security deposit?

The same amount as the monthly rate.

Should I apply although I am not ready to make a payment?

We strongly advise that you do not apply until you are ready to pay for your reservation.  Applying and not making the payment (as per the invoice we email you) can prolong the reservation process. Applying will not place you on a reservation list.

How do I receive mail and packages?

Your mail and packages can be picked up at the reception / help desk in the main lobby. The building address will be indicated on the confirmation email. You are permitted to have mail and packages sent BEFORE your move-in date but only AFTER your reservation has been confirmed.

After I move in, how and when do I pay rent?

Are the rooms private?

Yes. it’s just having your own apartment. We do not place you with roommates.

When will my reservation be confirmed once I submit my application?

Within 24 hours of your application being submitted, if we have availability we will email you an invoice for payment.  If we do not have availability, we will contact you to discuss other options.  Do not submit an application until you know for sure that you want to reserve a place and pay for your reservation. Your reservation will be confirmed once your payment is made.


Do the rooms have private bathrooms

Almost all rooms have private bathrooms.  Several rooms in the buildings utilize shared bathrooms.

Do I have to pay a security deposit?

Yes. The refundable security deposit is usually equal to the monthly rate.

Can I visit the residence before applying?

Yes!  Click here to schedule an in-person visit.. Your friends/family are also welcome to schedule a visit on your behalf. Please take note of the room # that you prefer to reserve.  Virtual tours are not currently available at this residence.
